A Little Rest

I was home from work this afternoon, feeling a bit under the weather. I slept for a few hours while it stormed outside. With the help of the rain, I finally got some restful sleep and when I woke up I felt quite a bit better.
It's now several degrees cooler. The evening, right before the sun set, was particularly pleasant. I went outside to check on my plants; the rain did them good as well. I closed the chicken pen at dusk, and waited for a few minutes, standing alone and very still in the yard. I was waiting to see the bats. Soon I saw one winging through the clearing. Still standing in the damp grass, sockless in my garden clogs, I listened to the chirps of the bat, and the soft buzz of beetle and bug wings. I sighed, a deep breath out. I think I'll be ready for tomorrow.

Mountains and Lilies

This weekend I got a big pile of mulch delivered. It's a little mountain, spread out on a tarp in our driveway. I got all of my front flower bed all mulched, and then mulched and planted some flowers at the base of two trees that border my patio. It was satisfying, being the kind of work that you can see the results right away.
The plants in the front yard are already starting to grow faster. The mulch is doing a nice job of retaining moisture from the new soaker hoses I laid down earlier this spring. I'm finding the soaker hoses are saving me a lot of time (and probably water, too, since less evaporates). I can just turn on the water, set the timer, and then leave to do something else.
While I was outside, two neighbor boys that live behind us came up to the back fence holding flowers. I got a gift of sweet little Star of Bethlehem (weeds, hehe). One of the boys matter-of-factly informed me that they are lilies - and he is right. They are in the lily family. :) I put the flowers in a green bottle.

{Here are my 'lilies' in a glass grape juice bottle. The light shone through the green glass very cheerfully.}
