A Smashing Party

I went to Natalie's birthday party Saturday night. So much fun, yay! Oh, man, it was so cold on the way there, though. Today wasn't much better, it was 7 degrees, but the wind chill made it feel like -11! Anyhoo, the party was fun, Allison and Jerry were also there from work and a lot of other fun people, most of which I hadn't met before. As it turns out, two of the gals are on the local roller derby team and invited Natalie and me to practice. So, Sunday I showed up, and now I'm on the team!! Arrrrrr!! -- I hope that Natalie will join, too. ;)
So, I need a derby name! Oh yeah, and some new skates. Har. I only have inline skates. I hope I can remember all of my quad skating skillz. I haven't skated with quad skates since jr. high. So, it might be hi-larious. But then, I have been on wheels since I was 2, so maybe my burning desire for speed will compensate. Or make for even more hilarity. (?!)
But check out these original retro hotties:

So cute they're sold out. But that's ok, so far I think I'm going with these:

The wheel/bearing package looks pretty sweet, plus the skate boot is retro cute! ;)Now I just need some ass kicking pom poms.
But on to the most important part: I need a name! Here's the list of taken names. Of course all of the best ones are on there. Like Ms. Anthropy and Pushy Galore. The list itself is hours of entertainment. This metafilter thread (Har, nerd derby!) has some interesting suggestions. I think my metafilter fave has got to be Sandra Day O'Clobber! Perhaps I'll try for Rainbow Blight. Too bad Punky Bruiser is taken. I wish that anyone else knew what chicha morada is. Then I could be Chicha Marauder.

Thursday Night Tea
• 10:35 AM

 |
Yesterday was quite good. It was topped off by english muffin mini pizzas (with some really good olives and mushrooms) for dinner and then some quality hanging out.
I had so much fun last night. And perhaps I stayed out too late, oooooh. The wife of Graham (one of my co-workers/friends), Natalie, has a birthday coming up. And they're both awesome by the way. Yay! So I met up with the "usual" crowd at another now smoke-free place. As I don't really drink myself, I had about 10 cups of hot tea. Oh man, I had to pee (!) after about 8 of them. I'm going to do it all again (well, excepting the incredible amounts of tea hopefully) Saturday, as Graham and Natalie are having a party at their house for Natalie's birthday. As it turns out, we live quite close. We almost lived on the same street; there is a really cute house on their street that we thought about buying before we bought our house.

Type... or die!

Yesterday, Keith said he had a surprise for me. And it was The Typing of the Dead! I've wasted a lot of quarters shooting poorly rendered zombies in House of the Dead II. And last night I wasted a good two hours "typing out" zombies on the remastered "type or die" version. If hell fills up, forcing the dead to walk the earth, look out for Mavis Beacon. She'll eat your brain.

There's a wiki on it here. And here's another description.

Yay! For the weekend! (too bad it's over)

This weekend I caught up on a lot of things I needed to get done, and it was great!
For starters, I finished checking the last page of citations! YAYAY! I'm all done. I think that there will be a bit more work for me related to that project, perhaps. Which is good; I can always use the extra work. But, I still can't deny my happiness at being through all 22 pages at last!
I got some quality grocery shopping in, so there are lots of things to eat. Yay for food! And I even got it all done right before we got another dumping of snow/ice. Last week everything got iced over. The ice was thick and thus really a pain. Both of our ice scrapers got broken, trying to chip off giant chunks of ice.
I also wrote my Christmas thank you notes. I love writing letters (and cute stationery!). Though, it took me awhile to get them done; I wanted to print pictures to include in some of them. Keith had tried to take the photos to Walgreen's for me for printing, but the person in front of him at the kiosk had literally 600 photos. That would be a long wait! He was understandably unwilling to muster that much patience. We were thus inspired to try out Walgreen's new service that allows you to upload your digital photos to be printed at the store and pick them up about an hour afterwards. It worked beautifully. I approve of anything that allows me to make fewer trips (well, in the future). I felt so efficient.
I got a good bit of laundry done, and even tidied up my laundry closet. We don't have a laundry room, but rather a compact closet type thing that houses the washer and dryer. I tend to let things pile up on the dryer and then Mao Mao makes a little nest on top of them. Mao will be disappointed to discover that I've put everything away. That reminds me, this morning I opened my drawer to get some socks and Luca dove in there and crawled in behind the drawers. She wouldn't come out, even when I had to leave for work, so the drawers are all still standing ajar. Bad!
But it wasn't all work. Friday night I played pool with some friends from work. Columbia recently banned all smoking in public places. Yay! I can go a lot of places I couldn't previously because of bad asthma/smoke reaction. Of cours the pool place was baaad before the smoking ban. I'm terrible at pool, but somehow ended up winning a game. Even though someone was cheating! Hey!

I have been very busy the last two days, photographing and adding things to my Etsy site! I've added more origami earrings and a couple of cards as well. I'm planning to add a few more cards soon, that are in progress now.

You can see for yourself over at at my shop.
Oh yes, and the Okra archives are back up and working again. I think that something happened when I switched over from the old blogger to the new googleified blogger. I'm sorry if anyone was trying to use them during their hiatus.

Yuck!

When I left for work this morning, it was lightly misting, and fairly warm. Nothing was frozen. When I went out to my car to go home for lunch, I had to scrape the ice off of my windshield. It's currently sleeting and everything is covered in a thin layer of ice. It's supposed to keep this up all weekend. Sounds like fun...
P.S. My co-worker just told me that, after returing from having a cigarette, my windshield has already frozen over again. I was hoping to get some good daylight this weekend to photograph some new things for etsy. Ha!

Keith has a lot of figures. Admittedly, I have some, too, but he has a major addiction. While he was away visiting family, I put up shelves in his office to display them on. The shelves are narrow - they are meant to be used as a picture rail, but they are the perfect width for the figures. The shelves are cheapy ones from Ikea, (haha, they're called "stripa") but they look pretty good! I think Keith was surprised. I feel so handy dandy.

{These guys used to be jumbled on our bookshelves. Not very heroic.}

One of our chickens laid a really weird egg today. It is kind of missing a shell; instead it has a leathery membrane, kind of like a lizard egg. It felt kind of creepy in my hand.

I took all of the ornaments and lights off of my Christmas tree today. It was dark by the time I finished taking everything off, so the tree is standing naked in our living room until tomorrow. It was a nice tree, and I'm sad to see it de-spiffified, waiting to be mulched. Maybe I'll have to put up some Valentine decorations or early Chinese New Year things to fill the void, hehe.

{Here's my origami crane ornaments, tucked safely inside their storage tea box. I realized, as I was packing up the stockings I made this year, that I never posted a pic of the finished second stocking as I had promised. I posted it on flickr with the Christmas photos if you want to see it.}

Bleh. But generally speaking, ok.

Despite being sick, today was rather productive. I ended up calling in sick after a night of little sleep. Keith was sick too, probably even more so than I, and had to get up several times in the night. Which then led to even less sleep for both of us.
While at home, I checked two more pages of citations and made five more pairs of origami crane earrings. I have two of the matching boxes complete, and when I get the rest of them done, I'll post them on Etsy. Yay!
After finally getting up this morning, I went to make an English muffin. Woefully, though, the toaster refused to work. It finally just quit. I had been considering getting one of those fancy (sort of gimmicky sounding) toasters that not only make toast, but poach an egg as well. This just sped up my decision making. All the reviews that I have seen say that they work really well. So, I guess we'll see. I ordered one from Amazon, using some of my rewards card gift certificates. (If you order a lot of things from Amazon, I highly recommend the Amazon Visa rewards card. It has certainly payed off for me, anyway.)
My toaster wasn't anything particularly fancy, but I'm kind of sad that it is now defunct. It was a birthday present from a good friend, Daniel, my senior year of high school (yikes, I guess that thing has lasted). Another friend (Spencer!) and I came up with this really weird prank of taking frosting, smearing it to pieces of toast, and then sticking the toast to Daniel's car (late at night, of course). Imagine trying to explain all of those loaves of Texas toast to the old lady manning the day old bread store. She made me promise four times that I wasn't going to eat it. After "toasting" his car multiple times, Daniel finally figured out who it was and hence, I got a toaster for my birthday (on the premise that mine had probably worn out from all of the toasting). Busted! Well, now the official "toasting" toaster has worn out. And I didn't even get to use it for pranks. Sigh. Now I'll have to think up a new prank involving not only toast, but poached eggs. Mmmm, that sounds delicious. I can prank myself.

Always Time for a Nap

I was getting sleepy, sitting on the floor, propped up against the couch in our TV room. I had wrapped myself up in a sleeping bag that my mom had when she was a little girl, in the '50s. I used to sleep in it when I was a little girl, too, visiting my grandma; it always reminds me of her. It is made of a somewhat strange, yet endearing print. I snapped a quick shot before Mister cat decided to crawl under the blanket too, and we both took an afternoon nap.

I created an Etsy shop today! I made paper origami crane earrings most of the afternoon and then photographed them for my new shop. There are only two things up on my shop at the moment, but I'll be adding more earrings and items soon!

Quick Update
• 6:13 PM
|
 |
It was another super busy week for me. I'm still checking citations. Not all of them had been checked before the 1st, as was the initial deadline (oh man, it just wasn't possible) but I was instructed to keep going anyway, until all of them are done. I got my first check for the job, which is great, so I'm still working away and I'm really liking the extra money.
I picked Keith up at the airport last night. I must say that I was not looking forward to the two hour (each way) drive to Kansas City, but it turned out to be ok. Keith drove home, which really helped. I got there a little early, so I also got to stop by and see my family while I was there.
Today was relaxing, and I think I'm starting to recover some from all of the craziness of the last few weeks. I slept in and then did some laid back, but productive things. (I'll be posting more about this in a bit.) Right now, Luca is curled up on my chest. It's kind of hard to type, but she looks so happy and cute that there is no way I'm going to make her move.
Lately, the chickens have been standing right outside of the back door, refusing to go into their chicken house at night. I opened the door earlier to let Mr. outside and to shut the door to their house (expecting them to be in it already), and there they were again. I picked up Lola and carried her to the chicken house and the others followed behind me, clucking and ruffling their feathers. I don't get it, usually they go in there house for the night before it's even fully dark out. And I even just cleaned out their house for them. ??

Happy New Year!

I hope 2007 will be a good one! :) I had a quiet New Year's Eve with my mom. We ate sushi, drank tea, and watched a movie.

I've been testing out one of my Christmas presents, a new digital camera! Now I have my own; I think that I use Keith's camera more than he does. Now he won't have to share with me. I got a Canon PowerShot A540. I've been reading reviews and testing it in different lighting situations. I'm pretty happy with it thus far.
