This evening I saw a hummingbird moth! (AKA Sphinx moth) It was so cool; it really looks like a tiny(ier) hummingbird. It was zooming around, going from flower to flower. It flew a few inches from my face while I was watering my petunias. It was very fast, but it actually paused for a second on a flower and I could see that it had bold orange stripes across its wings.
Here's some pictures pilfered from this interesting website on bugs. It looked similar to these:

I just bought the "Trial of the Century" album, by the French Kicks on iTunes. *Cripes* I really shouldn't be buying anything in light of my shoe purchasing... what I didn't tell you is that I actually bought three pairs. I need help. Anyway, so far I'm not having big album buying regrets. It's a good album. And I've listened to The Postal Service,Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and Franz Ferdinand CDs at least once a day at work. I will appreciate something new.

I actually wrote this yesterday, but blogger was down... so here it is anyway.
My mom came to visit me this week. We had a lot of fun together. I had been collecting vintage pillowcases at the thrift store, and we made a couple of them into skirts. They came out really cute! I'm not that great at sewing, so mom had to show me what to do. I made curtains to go over the shelves in my crafty room, but that's about where my sewing skills stop. But, I did manage to sew in a straight line to make a casing at the top of the skirt. Apparently there is yet hope for me. We ran a ribbon and elastic drawstring through the casing to make the waist. They turned out really good. I'd post pictures, but that will have to wait until Keith gets back; he has the camera!
Hummingbirds have finally discovered my feeder. One little hummingbird guy has been drinking from it. He's been sampling all of my flowers as well. I'm so excited that I have a hummingbird to watch! They are fascinating.
My garden is doing very well. I even found a Spiked Gayfeather, also called Blazing Star, at the farmers market. I finally found the purple variation that I was looking for. It was a really good deal. It is a very healthy plant, bigger than those at the garden center. It was also cheaper than the garden center price. I planted it in the bare spot where the sinister Loosestrife had been. It looks really good. All of my plants have been doing very well, despite the extreme heat we have had to endure lately. They have all really grown a lot. I need to take some more pictures of them, the difference really is amazing.
I just got another pair of shoes last week; I'm a sucker for graphic print, what can I say. They are Sugar brand. Last year I found a pair of Sugar shoes that I loved at a local resale shop, but they were too big. I'd been wanting some ever since. So, I got these in celebration of my promotion. Really, any excuse would do at this point, ha! They are very comfortable and so so cute.

Well, as you all already know, Keith is in San Diego now. So I have the entire house all to myself. Well, except for the cats. I've been getting a lot of boring things done that one might do alone, such as catching up on laundry, cleaning my desk, etc. It's pretty boring!
But tonight, veggie BLTs!! Yum. All for me! (Keith will be eating the most delicious Chinese food ever, so I have to cheer myself up. At least he hasn't been eating sushi while on the phone with me this time, hehe.)

The director of the department sent me an email today that said "Please come see me in my office for a few minutes." My first thought was "Uh-oh!" But it turns out I was offered a promotion! I will now be an administrative assistant and work for the director. I'm very very excited! I will also be working with my former co-worker again, who is great.

One Year!

I guess it's been while! I didn't even realize that I had been blogging for a year now. I breezed right past June 20, the date okra went live!
This week went by very quickly, with the 4th of July holiday mid-week. I had a great time. I lit all kinds of fireworks, and I still have all of my appendages. Most of the gang met at Neil's house for a lot of delicious food. The delights included Neil's tofu kabobs and Meghan's potatoes. I made a tomoto tart with pesto and feta cheese. I had to improvise for the crust after I discovered the recipe called for a ready made crust that contained lard. I used a puff pastry sheet instead, and that was surprisingly good. Neil roasted a Santa Claus melon for us for desert, and a few bad jokes later (regarding holiday confusion), we started lighting fireworks! Tom and Amanda brought some fireworks and I brought some, so we had quite an arsenal. We had a tank race, set off the "stegosaurus", lit the "killer bees", and nearly confused innocuous jumping jacks with black cats. I did twist the wicks of a few black cats, plus a few jumping jacks to create a monster bomb. That was fun. Everyone learned what a pyro I am.
Last night things were quieter around here with the 4th past. I did the usual things, including watering my garden. Luca went outside with me and was chasing a little bunny around. He was much too fast, but she had a great time. She finally stretched out on the lawn for a rest, until it was time to turn on the sprinkler. She was very indignant. I gathered up Luca and went inside, just as it was getting dark. I hadn't been inside long when I heard a strange sound by the back door. I looked out there and the chickens were all huddled up against the door. Instead of going in their chicken house, they all wanted inside our house! So, being the sucker that I am, I felt sorry for them and let them inside. I put them in the bathroom and they all perched along the side of the bathtub and went to sleep. Then, I went to get Keith, to help me figure out why they wouldn't go in their house. Meanwhile, Luca decided that the chickens had a good idea and she hopped up on the side of the bathtub to hang out with the hens. Mao curled up beside them on the floor. We went outside to discover that the door to their pen had accidentally been closed. So, we carried the hens back outside. I had to hold the flashlight for them so that they could get up on their perch in the chicken house. I hated to break up the slumber party, but thought that the hens might start trying to come inside the house every night!
