A Little Rest

I was home from work this afternoon, feeling a bit under the weather. I slept for a few hours while it stormed outside. With the help of the rain, I finally got some restful sleep and when I woke up I felt quite a bit better.
It's now several degrees cooler. The evening, right before the sun set, was particularly pleasant. I went outside to check on my plants; the rain did them good as well. I closed the chicken pen at dusk, and waited for a few minutes, standing alone and very still in the yard. I was waiting to see the bats. Soon I saw one winging through the clearing. Still standing in the damp grass, sockless in my garden clogs, I listened to the chirps of the bat, and the soft buzz of beetle and bug wings. I sighed, a deep breath out. I think I'll be ready for tomorrow.

Mountains and Lilies

This weekend I got a big pile of mulch delivered. It's a little mountain, spread out on a tarp in our driveway. I got all of my front flower bed all mulched, and then mulched and planted some flowers at the base of two trees that border my patio. It was satisfying, being the kind of work that you can see the results right away.
The plants in the front yard are already starting to grow faster. The mulch is doing a nice job of retaining moisture from the new soaker hoses I laid down earlier this spring. I'm finding the soaker hoses are saving me a lot of time (and probably water, too, since less evaporates). I can just turn on the water, set the timer, and then leave to do something else.
While I was outside, two neighbor boys that live behind us came up to the back fence holding flowers. I got a gift of sweet little Star of Bethlehem (weeds, hehe). One of the boys matter-of-factly informed me that they are lilies - and he is right. They are in the lily family. :) I put the flowers in a green bottle.

{Here are my 'lilies' in a glass grape juice bottle. The light shone through the green glass very cheerfully.}

I just got back from roller derby practice. Whew, I'm really tired. But it was fun! We did a 20 minute endurance skate that was pretty intense. It was a good end to a mellow weekend.
Right now I've got my feet up on the windowsill, catching a cool evening breeze. Mao Mao is sitting on the sill, her eyes are wide open and facing out into the dark yard. Her lips are curled into a big cat smile.
It finally warmed up enough for open windows and gardening. The cats and chickens followed me around as I dug and planted some zinnias, coleus, and some canna roots (I've never tried them before, we'll see how it goes). The cats rolled in the dust and the chickens snatched up unsuspecting bugs. It was relaxing and yet I got quite a bit done. (Ok, the cleaning the patio part wasn't relaxing. It sucked - edging the patio with a shovel was not fun. But the rest of it was good.)
This morning, I made a late breakfast of biscuits and gravy, at Keith's request. It turned out pretty good. It was vegetarian of course. I made the gravy with ground walnuts (used my Cuisinart), soy milk, whole wheat flour, and vegetable stock. I made the biscuits from scratch Yum! It feels good to actually cook something. I just haven't been up to cooking anything very involved lately.
I feel relaxed, and maybe even a little ready for the new week to begin. I didn't get all of the laundry done, all of the house cleaned, or all of the weeds pulled. But I did enjoy the sunshine, take a nap with the kitties, share some strawberries the the hens, and enjoy a couple of laid back afternoons. It's was a very satisfying weekend.

Crazy, crazy.

Last week I took my derby skills test, in order to get on an actual team. I passed! I got one of the highest scores! Yay! I was also told that I was "earmarked" to be a jammer! Whoohoo! I've been so busy, skating like crazy.
I have had a busy last two weeks (well, and pretty much since I stopped posting). As evidenced by the pictures, I had my family over for Easter as usual. I didn't dye as many eggs this year. I think that is a good thing, because the year before we couldn't even eat all of them. This time I think I got the amount just right. I had a good time with my family, and we had some good food! The weekend after Easter (this past Saturday) was my birthday! Yay! My family came to visit me again. My mom made me really good rum cake (My favorite kind. Arrrg, it makes me feel like a pirate!?). I'm still hoarding a small sliver in my fridge.
Friday, my co-workers sang to me and Judy brought a homemade angelfood cake and strawberries! It was so good! I like angelfood cake a lot; it is only second to rum cake! I also got a free bubble tea from our beloved bubble tea joint! They're really nice there.
Ok, it's off to yoga for me! Gotta run!

I hope your Easter was a happy one! Here's some photos of my Easter. I'm totally exhausted right now, but I promise more updates soon - rather than just lazy picture collections! Hehe.

I've posted a few other non-Easter pictures as well and reorganized my Flickr sets into collections. I'm so excited about the new collections feature! Yay!

Not the Usual Grind

I've found that this pepper grinder, that I originally discovered on Crate and Barrel, is now also available at Target. I still haven't bought a pepper grinder, as I was holding out for the perfect design. I dislike that traditional grinders are stored with the grinding parts down, and pepper sprinkles out all over the counter, etc. I have been looking for one that sits with the grinding parts up, and this one even has a lid for the top. It's also quite sleek looking. I may not be grinderless for much longer.
{Picture from the Crate and Barrel site. The price is the same at both stores, though we don't actually have a CB here. Hence the Target love.}

Knockin' socks off!

Tonight there is a special three hour derby practice. We are going to be bouting with each other for the first time. I'm really excited! The St. Louis coach is coming to help us.
I'm also excited because I found some footless tights on clearance at Hot Topic. I now have a whole collection of skull themed tights, plus one pair of solid black. I think these skull and star ones are my favorite. I also ordered a few pairs from Sock Dreams. I hope that I will find that they have been delivered when I get home from work, but I sort of doubt that they will, since I ordered them late Sunday night.

{Here's me wearing the skull tights. Oh. Yeah.}

{One of the pairs of socks I ordered. The picture is from the Sock Dreams website, the most fabulous sock shop perhaps ever.}
